Thanks a hundred and sixty one million…

…to Republican Governors-elect John Kasich and Scott Walker, who are giving up federal stimulus money for rail projects in their states. It'll be spread around a bit, but that's a nice chunk coming to the upper left...
The other states that will get Ohio and Wisconsin’s money will be Washington, which will get up to $161 million; Illinois, which will get $42.3 million; and New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, North Carolina, Iowa, and Indiana, which will all get less than $10 million.
So, thanks again, guys. We can use the money. And the jobs. The trains, too.

(I'm just guessing, but I'm betting that it's an educated guess, that thanks are also in order to Senator Murray for getting us such a prime spot on that list.)

Riding a choo-choo, down the middle of I5, at 75 mph, might make the investment worth the money. It would be nice if someone got work out of it other than the usual suspects: public employee unions.

Likely, the work projects connected with so-called High Speed Transit won't be akin to the old Civilian Conservation Corps; come what may. But maybe they could open up the door to the General Public a bit more than the current governor is known to do.

Public employee unions don't get much of the work from projects like these - they typically go to private contractors through competetive bidding. It's not the kind of work the CCC did for the most part, either. If your case is that Chris Gregiore's not a big fan of contracting out the jobs of organized public workers to private sector scabs (as opposed to jobs on public works, a different matter altogether), well, that's to her credit in my book.
